Mood, stress and your cycle: what Ayurveda says

Mood often shifts across the cycle, and stress can change your periods. Here is how Ayurveda looks at mind and cycle together.

Last updated: 5 October 2026

Mood often shifts across the cycle as hormone levels change. Many women notice irritability, low mood, anxiety or poor sleep in the days before a period, and stress itself can delay or disrupt periods. Ayurveda looks at the mind (manas) and body together through the doshas. AAVIE does not treat mental health conditions. It supports your cycle and hormonal balance with a personalised herbal supplement.

If you are struggling: please talk to a doctor, a counsellor or someone you trust. In India, Tele-MANAS offers free support on 14416, available 24 hours. If you feel you may hurt yourself or someone else, call your local emergency number straight away.

The Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda sees the mind as shaped by its own three qualities (sattva, rajas and tamas) and by the doshas. Anxiety and restlessness are linked with Vata, irritability and anger with Pitta, and low motivation or heaviness with Kapha. Stress also disturbs Agni. This is a traditional framework, not a diagnosis. Brahmi is the herb Ayurveda most associates with the mind.

Some women have severe mood symptoms in the week before a period, such as intense low mood, anxiety or anger that disrupt daily life. This can be premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), which doctors can help with.
