Acne and pimples around your period: what Ayurveda says

Breakouts that arrive with your period are common, especially between 18 and 24. Here is why they happen and where AAVIE fits.

Last updated: 5 October 2026

Acne often flares before or during a period because hormone levels shift, which changes oil production, and stress and poor sleep can add to it. Ayurveda links acne, called mukhadushika, with Pitta, Kapha and Rakta (blood) imbalance, often alongside sluggish digestion. AAVIE does not treat acne. It supports your cycle and hormonal balance with a personalised herbal supplement.

How it links with your cycle

Cycle phaseWhat many women notice
MenstrualHormone levels are low. Skin can feel sensitive or dull.
FollicularOestrogen rises. Skin is often at its clearest.
OvulationOil production can rise a little.
LutealHormone changes push oil production up. Breakouts often appear along the jaw and chin in the week before a period.

What it can look like

  • Pimples along the jaw and chin before periods
  • Blackheads and whiteheads
  • Painful, deep bumps
  • Oily skin
  • Breakouts with irregular periods or extra hair growth

The Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda describes youthful breakouts (yauvana pidika, or mukhadushika) as a mix of Kapha (oiliness and blockage), Pitta (heat and redness), Vata and Rakta imbalance. Ama, from sluggish digestion, is also considered a contributing factor. This is a traditional framework, not a diagnosis. Herbs with a traditional link to skin and blood include Manjishtha.

What the AAVIE assessment looks at

  • Cycle length, regularity and flow
  • Skin type and oiliness
  • Digestion and appetite
  • Stress and sleep
  • Food habits and routine
  • Your Prakriti and current Vikriti

Things that may help

  • Wash your face gently twice a day and avoid picking
  • Keep your sleep regular
  • Eat regular meals. Some people notice more breakouts with very sugary food or a lot of dairy, though the evidence is mixed
  • Avoid home remedies or products that burn or sting

How AAVIE supports you

AAVIE builds a personalised herbal supplement from your answers to support your cycle and hormonal balance. A Vaidya reviews it before it ships. It works best alongside regular sleep, meals and stress care. It does not treat any condition, and results vary.

See a doctor if:
  • Painful deep lumps or cysts
  • Scarring or dark marks forming
  • Acne that suddenly becomes severe
  • Acne with irregular periods, excess facial or body hair, or thinning scalp hair (ask about PCOS)
  • No improvement after several months of gentle care
  • Strong prescription medicines such as isotretinoin need a doctor and are not safe in pregnancy
Good to know: AAVIE is a herbal supplement. It does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition, and it does not replace medical care. Speak to your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a medical condition or take medicines.

Common questions

Is period acne different from normal acne?

It is the same skin condition, but flare-ups timed with your cycle point to a hormonal link. A doctor or dermatologist can help if it is persistent.

Can AAVIE clear my acne?

No. AAVIE does not treat acne. It supports your cycle and hormonal balance. Results vary, and AAVIE makes no claim about skin.
