Agni: digestive fire in Ayurveda
Agni is the Ayurvedic idea of your digestive and metabolic fire. It is central to how AAVIE looks at you.
Agni (Sanskrit for “fire”) is the Ayurvedic term for your digestive and metabolic fire: your capacity to turn food, and experience, into nourishment. Ayurveda describes four states of Agni. Agni is a traditional concept, not a lab measurement.
The four states of Agni
| State | What it looks like | Linked dosha |
|---|---|---|
| Sama (balanced) | Steady appetite, comfortable digestion | Balanced |
| Vishama (irregular) | Appetite and digestion that vary: hungry one day, not the next, gas or bloating swings | Vata-type |
| Tikshna (sharp) | Strong hunger, acidity, irritable when hungry | Pitta-type |
| Manda (slow) | Low appetite, heaviness after meals, sluggish digestion | Kapha-type |
Why Agni matters in Ayurveda
Ayurveda treats digestion as the base of health. When Agni is steady, food is processed well. When it is weak or irregular, Ayurveda describes incompletely processed material called Ama.
How AAVIE uses Agni
The assessment asks about appetite, digestion and regularity. Your Agni state is read alongside your Prakriti and Vikriti and helps shape which herbs are chosen. Some herbs, such as Triphala, are traditionally used for digestion and elimination.
What Agni is not
Agni is not a medical test and not a diagnosis. AAVIE does not measure your digestion. It asks about it.
Common questions
How do I know my Agni state?
The AAVIE assessment asks about your appetite and digestion and reflects your Agni state in your report.
Is Agni the same as metabolism?
It is similar in spirit, but Agni is a broader traditional idea that also covers how you process food and experiences.
