Ama: what it means in Ayurveda
Ama is an Ayurvedic idea about incompletely processed material. It is a traditional concept, not a lab finding.
Ama (Sanskrit for “raw” or “unprocessed”) is the Ayurvedic term for material that has not been fully digested or processed, which Ayurveda says can build up when Agni is weak. It is a traditional concept. It cannot be measured in a lab, and AAVIE does not test for it.
Sanskrit: Āma
Signs Ayurveda associates with Ama
- A coated tongue
- Heaviness or tiredness after meals
- Low or dull appetite
- Feeling foggy or sluggish
- Slow digestion
These are traditional descriptions. They can have many other causes, so talk to a doctor about symptoms that worry you.
Sama and Nirama
Ayurveda uses “sama” for states with Ama present and “nirama” for states without it. The distinction guides how a Vaidya thinks about a plan.
Ama is not “toxins”
Ama is sometimes described online as “toxins”. AAVIE does not use detox language or claim to remove toxins. It treats Ama as a traditional way of describing sluggish digestion.
How AAVIE uses Ama
The assessment asks about the signs above. If your answers suggest Ama, your supplement selection gives weight to supporting digestion. A Vaidya reviews the selection.
Common questions
Does AAVIE test for Ama?
No. AAVIE asks about traditional signs and does not test for Ama.
Is Ama the same as toxins?
No. Ama is a traditional Ayurvedic concept. AAVIE does not make detox claims.
