What Ayurveda says about Amalaki
Ayurveda classes Amalaki as a premier rasayana and one of the best herbs for Pitta. It is sour, cooling and rich in vitamin C.
Amalaki and your period
Traditionally used to cool Pitta-type heat, which Ayurveda links with early or heavy periods, and to support digestion and nourishment. Vitamin C also helps the body absorb iron from plant foods, one reason it features in women’s formulations.
Who it tends to suit
Often selected for Pitta-type heat and digestion that needs support.
Why the right dose matters
Why not less
Too little is unlikely to give the cooling, nourishing effect described traditionally.
Why not more
Too much can bring acidity, loose stools or stomach irritation, especially with Pitta-type digestion.
The right amount is not the same for everyone. It depends on your Prakriti and your current imbalance (Vikriti), which is why AAVIE sets it for you and a Vaidya reviews it. Read why the right dose matters.
Check with your doctor first if
- You take blood thinners or diabetes medicines, unless your doctor agrees
- You have acidity or stomach ulcers
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor agrees
Common questions
Is Amalaki safe for everyone?
No herb is right for everyone. Check with your doctor first if any of the cautions on this page apply to you. AAVIE asks about your medicines and conditions before selecting herbs.
Will Amalaki be in my AAVIE supplement?
Only if your assessment suggests it fits. AAVIE selects herbs for each person and each cycle, and a Vaidya reviews the selection.
